The "inventor" of the whiteboard was Martin Heit, a Korean photographer who got the idea while developing photos in a darkroom. This photographer realized that he could use a marker on the negative film. This way, if you wiped it with a damp cloth, the marks would easily erase. Heit thought he could use this to put on the wall next to the phone and write down messages there. Heit thus created his first whiteboards using film negatives. The photographer was preparing to present his invention when the event venue burned down the night before the premiere.As a result, Heit decided to sell his idea to the company Dri-Mark. Thus, instead of promoting it as a device for taking telephone messages, he introduced the new whiteboard to the world of education. In the 1960s, the first whiteboards went on sale.
