Art has evolved over time. In the beginning, art was only poems, books, painting. Now art has expanded much further; there's cinema, graffiti, and many more disciplines. This evolution has paved the way for other forms of expression to emerge, such as lettering.

But what is lettering?

Hand lettering, as its name suggests, is the activity of drawing letters by hand, unlike calligraphy, where entire words are conceived in a single stroke. In hand lettering, each letter is made with extreme care and planning, ensuring it functions and fits perfectly in the specific situation. Therefore, each design requires a specific typography that will change according to the design.

In lettering, since we are talking about drawing, we may need one or more sketches before obtaining the final result we are looking for to achieve a unique and expressive composition. It is also common to use adornments and ornaments to complement the work.

Within lettering, there are several styles, each with unique characteristics that differentiate it from the others. Below, we will present some of them.

Chalk lettering is a type of ephemeral lettering usually done on a blackboard and, as its name indicates, made with chalk. This type of lettering is widely used in commercial settings to convey messages in various businesses.

Brush lettering is the most similar to traditional calligraphy; the letters are made with elongated strokes, and curved lines predominate. Various types of paints or inks can be used, and it is usually done with brushes, although it is possible to do it with some types of markers and other tools. Two strokes predominate: the upward stroke, which should be done almost without pressing the brush on the paper to achieve a thin line, and the downward stroke, which is comparatively much thicker and achieved by applying greater pressure on the paper when making the stroke.
