Curiosities of onyx paper

These sheets can be impregnated with either powder or ink depending on their intended use. There is carbon paper for manual writing and carbon paper for dot matrix printers or typewriters.

Onyx paper

Carbon paper (also called tracing paper or carbon copy paper in some countries) is a sheet that allows making copies simultaneously when using typewriters, impact printers, or simply handwriting. How is carbon paper used? Carbon paper is used by inserting it between the original document and the copy. The operating principle is very simple. The pressure exerted on the original sheet causes the ink to transfer to the copy.

How is carbon paper made?

For the manufacture of carbon paper, a sheet of fine paper impregnated on one side with a layer of dry ink then covered with wax is used. The wax is subjected to a refining treatment to remove resins and then mixed with an absorbent to contain the ink and prevent stains.

Why does paper have carbon?

Cellulose fiber extracted from wood or cotton is the main component of paper. Paper contains 27% carbon, to which must be added that emitted during the production phases.

On what material can onyx paper be used?

Tracing paper can be used on various types of surfaces: paper, metal, wood, glass, fabric, and canvas. Unwanted lines can be removed with an eraser.
