USE AND HISTORY OF THE BINDER CLIP

A binder clip, or bulldog clip, is a simple device for clamping many or few sheets of paper together, such as essays, archive documents or manuscripts, among other uses. The binder clip leaves the sheets intact and can be easily removed without damaging the paper, unlike stapler clips. They are constructed with a loop at the ends and a folded strip of stainless steel sheet in the shape of an isosceles triangle. The tension along the base of the triangle forces the two sides to be closed, and the loops prevent the cutting edges of the steel from damaging the paper. The loops also serve to hold the two pieces of rigid wire in place, which act as grips and allow the clip to open. Compared to a paper clip, the binder clip is able to clamp sheets of paper more securely, and is also resistant to corrosion. There is a variety of sizes of paper clips, from a base size of 9 mm to 50 mm. It is common for the steel sheet portion to be painted black, with chrome handles, although a variety of decorative color schemes are also available. The steel sheet part is generally constructed of stainless steel, but can also be nickel, silver or gold plated.1The paper clip was invented in 1911 by Louis E. Baltzley in Washington. At that time, the method for clamping papers together consisted of making through perforations and sewing them, so adding or removing a single sheet was very laborious. Baltzley invented the paper clip to help his father, Edwin Baltzley, a writer and inventor, easily keep his manuscripts together. While the original design has changed five times, the basic mechanism remains largely the same.https://youtu.be/7nf_OxIrZN4
