What material is gesso used on? 

First white (primer) layer that does not yellow, with a matte finish, opaque, ready to prepare surfaces (canvas, wood, paper, cardboard, brick, cement, stone, among others) for all techniques (oil, acrylic, acrylic paint, vinyls, among others). It is applied directly without diluting on the surface. Clean tools with water. Do not add water to the same container if diluting; mix separately. NON-TOXIC. 

 What is gesso used for? 

Gesso is a very good material for preparing our painting surfaces and should be used primarily for two reasons. The first is to protect the support and the second is to improve the adhesion of the paint to the support. That is, if, for example, we want to paint with oil on a raw canvas, we can apply a layer of gesso before applying the oil paint. This layer of gesso, which is actually several layers, has two main functions: the first is to protect the fabric from the oil. As you know, oil paint is made with oil, so if that oil is absorbed by the fabric, the fabric will eventually rot. And, on the other hand, it serves to preserve the properties of the oil paint. Since, if we apply the oil paint directly to the raw fabric, as we have said, the fabric will absorb the oil. Thus, the oil paint undergoes an alteration in the oil/pigment ratio, which harms the oxidation or drying process of the paint. And therefore, it has a very high chance of cracking, or directly falling off in pieces. So gesso is a primer that can be applied to various surfaces such as wood, paper, cardboard, fabric, or a wall. And it serves to protect and improve the connection between the support and the medium to be used.
