How to care for oil paintings?

Caring for oil paints is essential to ensure their durability and quality in their original format (tubes, palettes, etc.). At Panafargo, we’ve prepared some recommendations to help prevent deterioration and preserve their properties. Join us!

Factors to consider when caring for oil paints:

1. Keep tubes tightly closed

Oil paint is oil-based and can dry out if exposed to air. By closing the tubes tightly after each use, you’ll prevent the paint from hardening and forming crusts on the nozzle.

Clean the edge of the tube before capping it to remove any paint residue. This will ensure an airtight seal.

2. Store tubes in a cool, dry place

Oil paints can be affected by heat or humidity. Storing them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, will help maintain their consistency and prevent the oil from separating from the pigments.

A drawer or a special box is ideal for caring for oil paints, as long as it is protected from heat sources like radiators.

3. Store tubes upside down

By storing oil paint tubes upside down, you prevent the oil from separating towards the nozzle, which can hinder paint flow. This is especially useful for tubes used infrequently.

A storage box or vertical organizer can be helpful for keeping them in this position.

4. Use older tubes first

Oil paints can have a long shelf life, but over time, the liquid part (oil) tends to separate from the pigment. Using older tubes first helps prevent waste.

If the oil has separated from the pigment, gently knead the tube with your hands before opening it to reintegrate the mixture.

5. Clean your palettes and utensils after each use

Dry paint residue on palettes and brushes can contaminate new colors you mix. To maintain a pure, impurity-free mixture, clean your tools with linseed oil or turpentine after each session.

Use a clean cloth or paper to remove excess paint, then finish with a specific oil paint cleaner.

6. Avoid direct sun exposure

Although paint tubes are designed to protect pigments from the environment, prolonged exposure to sunlight can deteriorate both the tube and its contents, causing the paint to lose its vibrancy or harden.

A dark place, such as a cupboard or a closed shelf, is the best storage space.

7. Check them periodically

Over time, even the best tubes of oil paint can show signs of deterioration. Periodically checking if tubes have leaks, if the cap is tight, or if the contents haven't separated is key to acting in time.

If the paint has separated, knead it gently. If the tube has a leak, transfer it to an airtight container.
