What material is gesso used on? 

First white (primer) layer that does not yellow, with a matte finish, opaque, ready to prepare supports (canvas, wood, paper, cardboard, brick, cement, stone, among others) for all techniques (oil, acrylic, acrylic paint, vinyls, among others). It is applied directly without diluting on the support. Clean tools with water. Do not add water to the same container if diluting; mix separately. NON-TOXIC. 

 What is gesso used for? 

Gesso is a very good material for preparing our painting supports and should be used primarily for two reasons. The first is to protect the support and the second is to improve the adhesion of the paint to the support. That is, if, for example, we want to paint with oil on a raw canvas, we can apply a layer of gesso before applying the oil. This layer of gesso, which is actually several layers, has two main functions: the first is to protect the canvas from the oil. As you know, oil paint is made with oil, so if that oil is absorbed by the canvas, the canvas will eventually rot. And, on the other hand, it helps preserve the properties of the oil. Since, if we apply the oil directly to the raw canvas, as we have said, the canvas will absorb the oil. This means the oil undergoes an alteration in the oil/pigment ratio, which negatively affects the oxidation or drying process of the paint. And therefore, it has a very high chance of cracking or crumbling into pieces. So gesso is a primer that can be applied to various supports such as wood, paper, cardboard, fabric, or a wall. It serves to protect and improve the connection between the support and the medium to be used.
